Kalamazoo Child and Family Counseling

A child-focused counseling practice with evening, and after school appointments available. Accepting most major insurances.

Kalamazoo Child and Family Counseling provides compassionate and quality therapy to children and their families.

We are a mental health clinic dedicated to serving children and teens.  Our clinicians all have special training and experience in child development and issues specific to children’s mental health.  We have a pediatric focus that is both trauma-informed and rooted in research-based strategies known to be effective with children.  Our counseling center specializes in providing therapy to children with anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)grief and loss, and behavioral disorders like oppositional defiant disorder.  Additionally, we work with many foster and adoptive families.  We help children and their caregivers who are experiencing attachment and relational difficulties.

Whether your child is experiencing challenges with anxiety, impulsivity, defiance, or other behavioral and emotional problems, we can help. Our team of child therapists provides child and family counseling.  We use evidence-based strategies to help children cope with and overcome difficulties.

Our office is not just child-friendly—this is a place just for kids (and their families)

We work with several insurance companies and are proudly helping children and their families in the Kalamazoo, Portage, Mattawan, and South West Michigan areas.  We understand that kids and their parents are busy!  We have morning, after-school, and evening availability for appointments.  We have two locations.  One of our offices is near the Cross Roads Mall in Portage, MI.  The Portage office is located on the 2nd tier of the Hillside Complex in the back with plenty of parking.  The other office is located just off of Westnege Ave in Kalamazoo in the Atriums.

Kalamazoo Child and Family Counseling welcomes all families.

Kalamazoo Child and Family Counseling is a counseling practice for all families.  Our office wholeheartedly embraces and celebrates all families, LGBTQIA+ families especially included.  Fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all children and families is at the core of the important work we do. We are committed to providing affirming support, understanding, and resources that promote the well-being and mental health of every child and their family, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Your Child May Need Therapy If…

They are defiant, or angry. Verbally or physically aggressive or frequently throwing temper tantrums. Hyperactive, impulsive, unable to concentrate, or disruptive at school. Worried, fearful, excessively sad, suffering from low self-esteem, or having problems making friends.  Have been through something traumatic.  Or are going through a transitional time in their life (such as being in foster care, or being adopted).  It can be difficult to tell if it’s just a phase or if something more is going on when children are struggling.  We are happy to consult and provide guidance about whether something is typical or cause for concern.
