Elizabeth “Libby” Matthews, LMSW completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Saint Mary’s College and her Master’s Degree in Social Work at Western Michigan University, with a specialization in trauma across the lifespan. Libby has experience working in schools helping children learn self-regulation and social skills, in addition to managing anxiety and other schPicture of Libby Matthews Child Therapist in Kalamazooool-related stressors. Libby also has several years of experience conducting clinical trauma assessments with children who have complex and relational trauma, including foster care and post-adoption cases.

Libby provides therapy to children and their families in the Kalamazoo, Portage, Mattawan, and the Southwest Michigan community. She is passionate about working with children who have been impacted by childhood trauma and adversity, including physical and sexual abuse, as well as those with anxiety, depression, and a wide variety of behavioral concerns. Libby believes that every child should have a safe space to openly express themselves through play and other activities that are equally engaging and effective. She strives to create a welcoming, judgment-free environment that is conducive to healing by encouraging children to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

Libby also aims to provide caregivers with insight to better understand their child’s feelings and behaviors, which will ultimately contribute to the healing process. Just as each child is unique, Libby recognizes and appreciates that every family has its own individual strengths which can be used as a foundation for attachment work and continued growth. Libby aims to provide her clients with support and encouragement to develop resiliency factors and coping strategies to withstand future adversities.
