When to Consider Therapy for Your Child or Teen

Children and teenagers naturally experience emotional and behavioral ups and downs. It is not always easy to know whether something is a temporary challenge or a sign that additional support may be helpful.

You may want to consider therapy when changes in your child’s emotions, behavior, relationships, or daily functioning persist, become more intense, or begin affecting life at home, at school, or with friends.

Signs that your child or teen may benefit from therapy include:

  • Frequent worry, fear, panic, or avoidance
  • Persistent sadness, irritability, hopelessness, or low self-esteem
  • Withdrawal from family, friends, activities, or previously enjoyed interests
  • Intense anger, defiance, aggression, or emotional outbursts
  • Difficulty concentrating, impulsivity, hyperactivity, or problems at school
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, energy, motivation, or personal care
  • Difficulty coping with grief, trauma, bullying, divorce, family changes, foster care, or adoption
  • Frequent physical complaints, such as headaches or stomachaches, without a clear medical explanation
  • Regression or a return to behaviors your child had previously outgrown
  • Family conflict or communication difficulties that are not improving
  • Risk-taking, substance use, self-harm, or statements about not wanting to live

You do not need to wait until a concern becomes a crisis. Therapy can also provide early support during stressful transitions, help children develop healthy coping skills, and give parents practical tools for responding to their child’s needs.

If you are unsure whether therapy is appropriate, our team can help you think through your concerns and determine what type of support may be helpful.

Immediate safety concerns: If your child is in immediate danger or may harm themselves or someone else, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For immediate crisis support, call or text 988.

Our services include approaches such as:

Treatment recommendations are individualized for each child and family. Our team will consider your child’s age, concerns, goals, developmental needs, and available providers when recommending services.

Finding the Right Therapist for Your Child

The relationship between your child and their therapist is an important part of successful treatment. A good fit involves more than credentials. Your child’s age, personality, concerns, communication style, treatment needs, and comfort with the therapist all matter.

Some children connect best through play and activity, while others prefer conversation, structure, or practical skills. Teenagers may also value having a voice in choosing a therapist and understanding how privacy will be handled.

Talking With Your Child About Starting Therapy

It is normal for children and teens to feel uncertain about meeting a therapist. Explain therapy in a calm, honest, and age-appropriate way. Let your child know that therapy is not a punishment and that they have not done anything wrong.

For a younger child, you might say:

“We’re going to meet someone who helps children and families with big feelings and difficult situations. You can talk, play, and learn new ways to handle things together.”

For an older child or teenager, you might say:

“We want you to have someone outside the family who will listen, respect you, and help you work through what has been difficult. You will have a voice in the process.”

Encourage your child to ask questions and share how they feel about the therapist. It can take time to become comfortable, but your child should gradually feel heard, respected, and safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the right therapist for my child?

Look for a therapist with experience addressing your child’s concerns and working with children in the same developmental stage. Treatment approach, scheduling, insurance participation, and how comfortable your child feels with the therapist are also important. Our team reviews each request to identify an available clinician whose experience may fit your family’s needs.

What ages do your therapists see?

KCFC provides services for growing families, children, adolescents, young adults, parents, and caregivers. The ages served vary by clinician, treatment approach, and the concerns being addressed. Information provided through our request form helps us determine whether we have an appropriate provider available.

How involved will I be in my child’s therapy?

Caregiver involvement depends on the child’s age, needs, treatment goals, and type of therapy. Parents and caregivers may participate in treatment planning, provide background information, learn strategies to use at home, or participate directly in sessions. Your therapist will discuss what level of involvement is clinically appropriate.

What happens during the first appointment?

The first appointment generally focuses on understanding your concerns, your child’s history, current strengths and challenges, and your family’s goals for treatment. The therapist will also explain confidentiality, answer questions, and begin developing treatment recommendations.

Does insurance cover therapy for children and teens?

Many insurance plans include outpatient mental health benefits, but coverage varies by plan, provider, and service. We recommend reviewing our accepted insurance plans and contacting your insurer to confirm benefits, deductibles, copayments, and any authorization requirements.

Do you offer after-school or evening appointments?

Morning, after-school, and evening appointments may be available depending on the schedules and availability of individual clinicians. Providing several scheduling options on the request form will help our team evaluate available matches.
