Elizabeth “Libby” Matthews, LMSW-C
Elizabeth “Libby” Matthews, LMSW-C completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Saint Mary’s College and her Master’s Degree in Social Work at Western Michigan University, with a specialization in trauma across the lifespan. Libby began her professional journey working in school-based settings, where she provided support to students with various social, emotional and behavioral needs. Libby also has several years of experience conducting clinical trauma assessments with children who have complex and relational trauma, including foster care and post-adoption cases.
At our agency, Libby provides therapy to young children and their families in the Kalamazoo, Portage and the greater Southwest Michigan area. She is passionate about working with children who have been impacted by childhood trauma and adversity, such as abuse or neglect, as well as those with anxiety, depression, and a wide variety of behavioral concerns. Libby believes that every child deserves a safe space to openly express themselves through play and other therapeutic activities that are equally engaging and effective. She strives to create a welcoming, judgment-free environment that is conducive to healing and learning by encouraging children to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Her therapeutic methods are grounded in evidence-based practices, including CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), trauma-informed care, and PCIT (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy). Libby aims to not only address immediate emotional and behavioral issues, but also equip children and their families with the tools they need for long-term success.
